Albert Namatjira was an Australian artist. His name used to be Elea Namatjira but he changed it to Albert. He was an Aboriginal from the western MacDonnell Ranges. He used watercolours to paint the Australian outback
He used a lot more detail than the tradition finger paintings and the change is effective. In 1957 he became the first Australian to be accepted as a citizen. As a citizen, he could vote, he could buy alcohol and build a house.
In 1968 he was the first Aboriginal to be granted the honour of being on a postage stamp. His detailed art highlighted the geological features but also catching the beauty in the pictures.
